Spelers in België kunnen van een aantal kwalificatietoernooien profiteren die veel extra’s bieden. Er zullen twee series kwalificatietoernooien gehouden worden, met elk een spectaculaire finale aan het eind. Je vindt deze toernooien alleen voor spelers uit België in de PokerStarslobby door  ‘Toernooi’ en ‘Regionaal’ te selecteren.

LET OP: spelers moeten ten minste 21 jaar oud zijn om te mogen spelen in het Belgian Poker Open Championship.

Main event

3mmt x 3ft = 9k

Na de zwaar bevochten qualifier tussen de top PCB-ers was ik de gelukkige winnaar die samen met 13 anderen Belgie mocht gaan vertegenwoordigen in de Everest Poker European Cup.

Verslag:
Het goed georganiseerde tornooi met een prijzenpot van €100.000 vond plaats in het Gran Casino Costa Meloneras te Gran Canaria van 21–24 mei.
Alle gekwalificeerde spelers verbleven in het vijfsterren Lopesan Baobab Resort.
Na heel goed ontvangen te zijn in het hotel besloten we om vrijdag (de dag voor de start van de epec) geen gebruik te maken van de openings party, maar gingen ik en mijn gast een bountytornooi spelen in het Casino (hiermee kon ik al beetje indruk krijgen van de dealers). Gratis drank lieten we zelfs daarvoor schieten!
Buiten dat ik een goede indruk kreeg, wist ik ook al meteen de finale tafel te bereiken. Met nog 3 man over, en net een groot gedeelte van mijn chips te zijn verloren, heb ik een deal voorgesteld die goed was voor ongeveer 2K Mijn buyin had ik al terug aan de bountys die ik veroverd had tijdens het tornooi.
Mooie start dus van het weekend!
Dag 1 EPEC
Aangezien het een freeroll was waren er veel beginnelingen aanwezig (wat op zich niet echt makkelijk spelen is aangezien je die er niet zo snel uit kan betten). Gelukkig kwam ik aan een tafel met zeker 4 of 5 goede spelers met redelijk wat toernooi ervaring.
Tot aan de break zat het me aardig mee. Na eerst 2 setjes te hebben gehit en wat geslaagde blufjes wist ik mijn stack al snel uit te bouwen naar ongeveer 29k
En waren er al redelijk wat spelers uitgedund aan tafel, ik kreeg een paartje 7ens en Marco lain raised naar ong 2,2k de blinds waren op dat moment ong 600 en een shortie gaat allin voor 2,250 en ik call mijn pocket 7ens waarop Marco alleen nog maar mocht callen.
De ideale flop met x77 waarop Marco zijn 12k besloot er in te gooien met ak was dus geen moeilijke beslissing voor me en bood hem ook mijn verontschuldigingen aan met het feit dat ik deze hand echt niet meer kon folden en dit bracht me ook naar een gigantische chiplead op dat moment van het toernooi.
Een Zweed (de uiteindelijke winnaar) en een Fin nemen net voor de break nog plaats aan mijn tafel en ik ga de break in met ongeveer 60k aan chips
Na de break weet ik in eerste instantie mijn stack nog uit te bouwen tot ongeveer 75k en dan is het een beetje afgelopen.
De Zweed in positie gaat 3 keer op rij allin en ik besluit op mijn SB mijn a5 tegen zijn BB niet weg te lopen en call. Helaas heeft hij AQs en mijn gigantische stack word weer uitgedund.
Kort daarna verlies ik nog Two Pair waar ik op push op de turn en word gecalled door de Fin met zijn biertje in zijn handen. Die zat op een flushdraw en hit helaas zijn flush. Na kort daarna een nutflushdraw niet te hitten zat ik weer net boven average en waren er nog maar ong 50 spelers over.
Ik weet de laatste 36 spelers dan toch te bereiken met nog maar 19,4k aan chips en blinds van 5K (wat op dat moment al zeker goed was voor 400 euro)
Lekker ontspannen met de weet dat het heel makkelijk spelen is met zo een lage stack neem ik plaats aan tafel. Mijn kamergenoot komt me dan nog even melden dat het side-event, dat 45minuten later zou beginnen, bijna vol is.
Ik ben me daarvoor vlug in gaan schrijven en heb mijn stack neergezet op tafel. (aangezien 4 bb en met de snelle structuur me normaal niet meer lang in leven zouden houden)
Ongelofelijk maar waar weet ik me toch terug te vechten en speel weer met een avg stack. Er is een korte break in het ME, waar ik mooi gebruik van kan maken om mijn 3,8k aan chips in nog geen 15 min uit te bouwen naar bijna 15k in het side-event. Ik ben dus echt aan het livemultitablen!!!!
Dit gaf me natuurlijk een extra boost! Vlug ren ik terug naar mijn tafel in het Main-Event (waar ik helaas mijn eerste 2 handen heb moeten missen) en ik schakel nog 2 man uit en weet zo de Finale tafel te bereiken op dat moment als 2de in de chipcount.
Er is nu een Break van 2uur
Na de finale tafel bereikt te hebben ga ik weer snel terug naar het side-event en weet daar in minder dan 1 uur mijn stack uit te breiden naar ongeveer 80k!
Het side-event had ook een uur pauze en ben toen maar snel een hapje gaan eten in het hotel.

De Final Table
Net voor de final table begon kwam Everest ons melden dat Belgie met nog 2 spelers in het toernooi zeker was van de Cup.
Diegene die het verst zou komen mocht de mega Cup mee naar huis nemen.
Helaas had ik ondanks dat ik 2de in stack was met ong 250 aan chips en blinds van meer dan 20k de pech dat ik rechts naast de chipleader (de Zweed van dag 1) kwam te zitten.
Mijn eerste hand aan de final table was meteen een pp 4en en ik besluit deze meteen agressief te spelen waarop ik meteen 3bet krijg van mijn Zweedse buurman waarop ik mijn pp open foldde.
De blinds waren zo hoog dat het merendeel al in pushfoldmodus zat en agressief spelen vaak ook werd beloond.
Met blinds van ong 30k aan blinds dacht ik met KJ de Cup binnen te kunnen halen. Mijn landgenoot raised naar 70k met nog maar 40k achter de hand en ik besluit met meer dan 250k te pushen waarop hij insta called.
Helaas krijg ik rockets te zien, maar brengt een qt flop mij nog veel outs!! De pokergoden boden helaas geen hulp en dus geen cup mee naar huis helaas.
Vlak daarna verloor ik een pot waar mijn aks niet genoeg was tegen j8o
Ik wist toch weer goed terug te komen nadat ik met nog geen 2 blinds blind allin ging en meteen een set hitte.
Mijn laatste Chips gingen er in met ax tegen aq helaas, maar mocht ik 5k euro’s netjes op mijn rek laten bijschrijven.
Daarna weer snel terug naar het side event waar in nog ong 55k aan chips over had en deze weer goed wist uit te breiden tot meer dan 300k. En zo dus mijn 3de Final table van het weekend kon gaan spelen!
Uiteindelijk heb ik daar rond 3 a 4 uur nacht’s ook nog een SPT Ticket (twv 2k) binnen weten te halen en kon ik dus spreken van een mega weekend met heel veel leuke ervaringen en een super organisatie.

Ik wil Everest en Pcb bij deze bedanken voor de ervaringen die ik weer op heb kunnen doen. Voor de leden van PCB heb ik nog een bounty tornooi georganiseerd met 200 dollar in de prijzen pot. Ook zal er een 50 dollar bounty zijn voor diegene die mij eruit weet te gooien!

Phil Laak can outplay biological processes.

Early Saturday evening in the Bellagio poker room, the 37-year-old poker pro set the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous poker session on the felt. Laak passed Paul Zimbler’s mark of 78 hours, 25 minutes and 45 seconds set in 2009.

The rules of the record attempt were simple: The entire session must be video taped, witnesses must be present and a five minute break is allowed every hour, with the option of accumulating unused break minutes.

At the stakes of $10/$20 no-limit hold’em, Laak bought in for $4,000 during the first few hours, but eventually loaded up with $100,000, in order to have the rest of the table covered.

With a meticulous handmade chart by his side, Laak kept record of his upswings and downswings. About an hour before he passed the record, Laak was stuck about $17,000, until a hand with friend and fellow poker pro Antonio Esfandiari put him in the black.

Esfandiari raised to $120 from early position and action was folded to Phil Laak in the small blind. Laak amassed a stack of randomly assorted chips for a massive reraise. Esfandiari made the call and the flop came 6c 5c 2h. Laak and Esfandiari got all the money into the middle and agreed to run it four times. Laak exposed AA and they held all four times against the apparent queens of Esfandiari.

Shortly after the hand Laak’s line graph displayed a profit of $6,500, half of which would go to the charity he was playing for — campsunshine.org

Even with a stack of over 5,000 big blinds at the table, the decision for $10/$20 no-limit was an easy one for Laak, who routinely plays for some of the highest stakes in the world.

“If I start to melt down, I don’t want to lose too much of my net worth,” Laak said while digging into one of his prearranged meals — a container with brown rice, chicken and broccoli. “The trick to staying awake is to be active with your brain. So I plan on playing my regular game the whole way.”

Laak’s assault on the world record began Wednesday afternoon, but the preparation started much earlier.

“When I was a kid, I would go to bed at like noon and my parents would get mad because they would have to wake me up for dinner,” Laak said. “That was the only time we had to be anywhere and I didn’t think that was fair. They didn’t care when I went to bed, so that would often be night owl sessions. I was already, without even knowing it, training for this.”

In addition to a childhood of mild insomnia, Laak’s entire summer, thus far, has been in preparation for this one session. He has not played in a 2010 World Series of Poker event. According to Laak, event No. 55 ($10,000 pot-limit Omaha championship) on July 1st is tempting. However, the main event is definitely on his schedule.

Laak said he would love if the WSOP created a bracelet event with no breaks, but doesn’t think it will ever happen due to possible medical emergencies.

WSOP Media Director, Nolan Dalla is also doubtful about the prospects of such an event.

“We have a lot of other possible events that are on the queue list of what belongs on the World Series schedule,” Dalla said. “Something like that is way, way down the list. I don’t think it would appeal to a wide cross section of people. I think the World Series is about bringing everyone in. It might be interesting to watch from the train-wreck perspective, but I don’t think it is good from the poker perspective.”

Even with the possible consequences, the concept has been tested before.

The Commerce Casino recently held the $2,100 Iron Man no-limit hold’em event at the 2010 L.A. Poker Classic. The one-day event, which featured no scheduled breaks, wasn’t popular, attracting just 64 entrants.

At least 64 people were sweating Laak when the countdown to world record began. When the laptop timer final passed Zimbler’s mark, the Bellagio poker room sounded more like the Amazon Room after a bracelet victory.

With the record broken and Laak appearing in good condition, no one in the room, including the “Unabomber” himself, knew when the endurance session would end.

“I am never revisiting this moment,” Laak said. “So since I know that, I want to pull the shred to the nothingness of it. Maybe I taste where my body can’t go. I am pretty aware of my body because it’s mine and I use it all the time. I feel like I am playing with one of nature’s instruments to the edge.”

The talkative nature of Laak’s personality remained constant, even at times when it seemed like he was losing his mental acuity.

After a lengthy anecdote about a man who was able to free himself after having his arm pinned down by a rock, Laak concluded, “Wow I’m really coming down from being tired, or being awake, because none of that really made sense. Yeah, that was rambling, I’m pretty sure that was a lot of rambling.”

While most poker players who sit through marathon sessions rely on coffee or some form of caffeine to stay awake and alert, Laak has avoided all stimulants through his chair swiveling toward the record books.

Behind the thrill of chasing records, all the drowsiness, confusion and short term memory loss that was seeping into the brain of one of poker’s deepest thinkers, is a kid that likes staying up late and takes pride in a quirky talent.

“I believe we all have natural gifts,” Laak said. “You don’t find stuff, stuff finds you. Someone might be an amazing glass blower but they will never know because they aren’t blowing glass. If I didn’t get into the degenerate lifestyle that is poker, I would have never found out that I have a knack for super enduro-sessions. I accidentally discovered I have this in me.”

NOTE: At the time this article was released, Laak was at hour 102, further distancing himself from the record of 78 hours.

Update: Early in the morning on June 7th, Laak called it quits and went to bed. Exactly 115 hours were on the clock when Phil stepped away from the table. He finished with a $6,766 profit en route to smashing the record by 37 hours.
